What does a Linux Cluster look like?

I get asked all the time what I do for work. When I actually go into detail, I can see the persons eyes gloss over in less than 15 seconds. Well, they say a picture is worth 1,000 words, so here is a picture of a former colleague and all around swell guy Matt Bohnsack in front of a 512 node Linux Cluster at his work. I’m not sure how wide of a lens this was taken with, but you can click on the image to see a larger version.

For those really interested the orange fibre cables are for Myrinet. Myrinet uses a protocol called GM. This is a high speed low latency networking protocol that runs much more efficiently than IP. The aqua cables are for IP packets. Also, you will notice the whole system can be managed from one monitor and keyboard.
I’ve worked on a couple systems this size and even a couple that were double this size.

My niece Jamie and I on 1/1/06. Notice her favorite gift of the day is a $.99 Halloween pumpkin.
