Last night was the fund raiser for 826 NYC a non-profit in Park Slope dedicated to supporting children’s writing skills and writing creativity.
Jon Stewart and his producer from the Daily Show read chapter four of his book “America”. His producer played the part of a professor who has supposedly made annotations to the paper-back version of the soon to be re-released book. It was pretty funny roll play. And if you think Jon is doing everything from cue cards on the Daily show, he was really funny playing off the cuff here as well.
Sarah Vowell had Eric Bogosian join her on stage for a funny reading about explorers John Freemont and Joseph Nicollet. Eric Bogosian read the Nicollet parts.
John Roderick did three songs which were really nice, kind of sounds a bit like Michael Stipe with his voice, but i liked his guitar playing and lyrics more than the vocals.
Sufjan Stevens played “The Mistress Witch from McClure”, followed by “Jacksonville”, “Chicago”, “Csimir Pulaski Day”, and “The Dress Looks Nice on You” dedicated to the teacher that taught him to write.
David Byrne did a country set of five songs. Believe he did 2 or 3 Talking Heads songs. Finally Sufjan joined David for a finally of Lefty Frizzel’s, Saginaw, Michigan.
